The quietest place on earth is a sound studio in Minneapolis, which is only -9.4 dBA loud. It’s so quiet that there is a running bet over a case of beer for anyone who can stay in the studio for 45 minutes with the lights off. So far no one has lasted over 30. When John Cage visited a similar anechoic chamber, he said he “heard two sounds, one high and one low. When I described them to the engineer in charge, he informed me that the high one was my nervous system in operation, the low one my blood in circulation.”
